SCAC - Standard Carrier Alpha Code

The Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC) is a unique code used to identify transportation companies. It is typically two to four alphabetic letters long. It was developed by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association in the 1960s to help the transportation industry for computerizing data and records.

When getting setup for Pre-Arrival Processing System (PAPS), you need to apply for a Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC).

The SCAC Code is given by:
National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.
1001 North Fairfax Street, Suite 600
Alexandria, VA 22314
Phone: (703) 838-1810
Fax: (703) 683-6296
NMFTA Website

There is a $60.00(US) fee for the code which must be renewed annually and the process can take 1 or 2 days. Once you have receieved the letter assigning you a SCAC, make sure you read it carefully for further instructions

Renewal Reminder to Carriers

Please be advised that all carriers must maintain a valid SCAC to avoid disruptions and/or having the SCAC reassigned to another company. The preferred way for carriers to renew their SCAC is through the NMFTA Web site using the NMFTA EasyPay System.

Once the carrier has received a confirmation letter that they have completed their application or renewal from NMFTA. A copy should be sent to CBP as an electronic copy TIF or PDF file attachment to an e-mail or via fax or mail. Email and address information is as follows:
